SANSKRIT: LEARN THE LANGUAGE OF YOGA with Amanda Culp

An introduction to the history and fundamentals of the Sanskrit language. Over the course of four sessions, students will learn basics of Sanskrit grammar and pronunciation that will aid in their study and practice of Yoga. Each session will conclude with a comprehensive analysis of a Sanskrit verse (including the invocation to Patanjali, the Ashtanga chant, and a Sutra or two!) so that students can begin to understand how each text means what it means.

Amanda Culp is a PhD Candidate in theatre at Columbia University, where she specializes in Sanskrit drama. She has studied Sanskrit at Yale University, Columbia University, and at the American Institute of Indian Studies in Pune, India.

Tessa Manning is a certified Iyengar Yoga teacher. She has been practicing Iyengar yoga since 2007 and received her teacher training at the Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco. She recently studied with the Iyengar family in India. Tessa is dedicated to the Iyengar method because of its attention to alignment and the thorough change it brings about in the body. An avid practitioner, Tessa has used Iyengar Yoga to help treat her scoliosis. She teaches in a way that is safe, accessible, and compassionate – providing individual attention to each student.

YOGA THERAPY FOR THE BODY, MIND, HEART & SOUL: HEALING & SELF CARE WORKSHOP SERIES

“Open to the simple joy of being.”

In each session we will explore gentle strengthening and balancing movements; specific breath techniques to balance, clear, and stimulate our System, including fire breath, lion breath, and viloma/anuloma (alternate nostril breathing). We will focus on healing sounds as a way to activate and sooth body and mind. Mirka will guide you through gentle visualizations and relaxation, using the 61 points in the body, preparing for Yoga Nidra meditation, resting in stillness of our “sacred heart.”

Mirka Scalco Kraftsow is a yoga therapist bringing decades of experience as a dedicated mentor to yoga students and teachers, leading retreats & workshops in the US and Europe. A co-founder of the American Viniyoga Institute, she has helped hundreds of individuals maintain a personal practice and manage challenging therapeutic conditions.

Brian Hogencamp is a full-time practitioner, and certified instructor of Iyengar yoga. He is a student of Manouso Manos and returns annually to RIMYI in Pune, India to study with the Iyengar family. As yoga is an experiential subject, he believes the distance between what is taught and what is learned can only be illumined by one’s own practice. Consistent, dedicated practice continues to reveal to him the universality and completeness of the Iyengar approach to yoga. Drawing from his evolving experience and with deep gratitude for the teachings received, he is eager to share the light yoga can bring.
